SpaceX Rocket Launch Creates ‘Space Jellyfish’ Phenomenon Over Southeastern US

Champaign Urbana & Springfield Decatur, IL, October 13, 2026 —

A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launch on early Tuesday morning from Cape Canaveral, Florida, created a spectacular and unusual visual display, with its exhaust trail visible across multiple southeastern states. Residents in Georgia, Virginia, and North Carolina reported seeing the phenomenon, which was widely described as resembling a “space jellyfish.”

The striking visual was a result of the rocket’s exhaust trail interacting with the atmosphere during twilight. As the Falcon 9 ascended, its exhaust plume expanded in the extremely thin air of the upper atmosphere. This expansion, combined with the low angle of sunlight during dawn, caused the trail to illuminate and take on an ethereal, jellyfish-like appearance.

The primary mission of the launch was to deliver crucial supplies to the International Space Station (ISS). SpaceX, the aerospace company founded by Elon Musk, regularly conducts launches from its Florida facilities to support ongoing space missions and the operations aboard the orbiting laboratory.

While the visual effect was striking and captured the attention of many observers, it was a natural consequence of rocket propulsion and atmospheric conditions. The specific technical details of the plume’s expansion and interaction with twilight illumination explain the widespread visibility and distinct shape reported by onlookers.

Information regarding the specific flight number or any technical details beyond the mission’s objective was not provided in the summary. The exact time of the launch, beyond being “early Tuesday morning,” was also not specified.
