The art materials brand is expanding a product-development model that brings practicing artists into brush design, testing and refinement from an early stage.
LOS ANGELES, CA, UNITED STATES, September 23, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — FUUMUUI, an art materials brand focused on watercolor brushes and painting tools, is expanding its artist-led approach to product development by working directly with practicing artists to translate real-world painting methods into brush design.
The approach is reflected in the FUUMUUI & Svetlin Sofroniev Master’s Set, developed in collaboration with professional watercolor artist Svetlin Sofroniev as part of the brand’s flagship FUUMUUI Ultimate Collection.
Positioned as FUUMUUI’s highest-tier watercolor brush line, the Ultimate Collection focuses on premium materials, professional performance and brush characteristics shaped around demanding watercolor techniques.
Rather than developing the Master’s Set solely from conventional brush specifications, FUUMUUI and Sofroniev focused on how a professional watercolorist moves between broad washes, expressive passages, flowing lines and controlled detail.
In the October–December 2026 issue of Watercolour magazine, Sofroniev described using his own Signature brush collection “developed with FUUMUUI according to my specifications.”
He also explained some of the characteristics he values in his working brushes. Mop-style brushes inspired by traditional squirrel brushes support large washes and expressive passages, while longer-bodied round brushes are designed to carry more water and pigment and produce fluid, responsive marks.
Those working preferences are reflected in the four-brush Master’s Set. The collection combines Kolinsky sable and natural squirrel hair across specialized shapes intended for different stages of watercolor painting, including broad washes, continuous lines, pigment control and fine detail.
“Artist-led development begins with understanding how painters actually work,” said [Name], Product Development Manager at FUUMUUI. “Brush shape, hair length, softness, point retention, water capacity and responsiveness can all influence the painting process. The goal is to bring those practical observations into product development rather than designing tools only around standard specifications.”
Beyond formal artist collaborations, independent use by professional painters offers another perspective on how FUUMUUI brushes perform in real-world practice.
In a separate interview in the same issue of Watercolour, artist André Kano discussed his use of natural-hair brushes as well as his increasing use of high-quality synthetic alternatives. When describing the manufacturers whose brushes he works with, Kano included FUUMUUI alongside Winsor & Newton, Raphaël, Escoda, Da Vinci and Isabey among manufacturers he considers “exceptional.”
The two interviews represent different aspects of FUUMUUI’s artist-focused development strategy. Sofroniev participated directly in shaping brushes around his working requirements, while Kano’s comments show how FUUMUUI brushes have independently become part of a professional painter’s wider selection of tools.
This approach extends beyond a single collaboration. Through FUUMUUI’s artist collaboration collections, the brand has been developing Signature and jointly created products with artists working across different techniques and painting styles.
FUUMUUI plans to expand this model by inviting more practicing artists to become part of its product-development process.
Future collaborations may involve artists contributing to early brush concepts, testing prototypes, refining specifications and helping shape Signature or artist-led collections based on their individual painting methods. Artist feedback may influence brush shape, hair composition, size, water retention, pigment release, point retention, responsiveness and handling characteristics.
The goal is to create a development model in which artists are not simply endorsing finished products, but helping shape the tools from an early stage.
FUUMUUI sees this approach as particularly relevant to watercolor because working requirements can differ significantly among artists. A painter focused on large washes may prioritize water capacity and softness, while plein-air painters, botanical artists or artists working with detailed architectural subjects may place greater emphasis on point control, portability, responsiveness or precise pigment release.
By involving artists with different methods and creative priorities, FUUMUUI aims to develop future tools around specific real-world painting needs rather than relying on a single definition of the ideal watercolor brush.
